What “international patient care” involves at our Roodepoort practice
International patient care is the coordination of dental treatment for visitors travelling to Johannesburg from outside South Africa. Most international patients fall into three groups: planned cosmetic visits (veneers, smile makeovers, clear aligners, dental implants including All-on-4), routine treatment combined with business or holiday travel, and emergency care when a dental problem occurs while abroad. Our role is to plan treatment around your travel dates, deliver care across one or several visits, and coordinate follow-up with your dentist at home where helpful.
For planned cosmetic visits, we review your case before you travel: photographs of your smile, recent x-rays where available, and a description of what you would like to achieve. We respond with a written treatment plan and indicative cost estimate, in line with HPCSA transparency guidelines, so you can decide and budget before you commit to travel.
The Dr Chalita approach to international patient treatment
Three things make Dr Chalita le Roux Inc. well suited to international patients. First, continuity: our single-dentist practice means the clinician who plans your treatment is the clinician who performs every step – from initial consultation through to delivery of the final restorations. There are no clinical handoffs between staff, which matters when work is sequenced across a tight travel window.
Second, same-day digital workflow: where the treatment plan allows, we use CEREC CAD/CAM technology to scan, design, mill, and bond ceramic restorations in a single appointment. For international patients, this can compress what would otherwise be two visits at a traditional practice into one – useful when your travel window is short.
Third, written estimates before any treatment begins. In line with HPCSA guidelines and our standard practice, you receive a transparent treatment plan and indicative cost before consenting to treatment. This is shared in advance for international patients so there are no surprises after you land.
Who international patient care is right for
You may be a good fit for our international patient care if you are travelling to Johannesburg with at least three to seven days available for dental work, you have a clear treatment goal, you are comfortable sharing photographs and imaging before you arrive, and you can manage your own travel and accommodation arrangements. Most cosmetic veneer cases, single-tooth implants, and same-day crown cases fit within this window.
International patient care is less suitable if your treatment requires multiple stages with healing time between them – for example, full-arch implants with bone grafting may need three to six months of healing before final restorations, which generally means two separate trips. We will say so honestly in the written estimate if your case falls into this group.
What to expect when you visit
Before you travel: send us photographs, recent x-rays where available, and a description of what you are hoping to achieve. We respond within two business days with a written treatment plan and indicative estimate. Once you have decided to proceed, you book travel and accommodation and send us your final dates so we can lock in chair time.
On the day of your first visit: arrive at Unit 2, Amorosa Office Park, Corner of Doreen Road and Lawrence Road, Amorosa, Roodepoort. There is free on-site parking. Your first appointment typically combines a full clinical exam, photographs and digital scans for the treatment plan, and the first stage of treatment if appropriate. Subsequent visits are sequenced according to the agreed plan. Where suitable we use same-day workflows to minimise the number of appointments needed.
Aftercare and follow-up after you return home
We give written aftercare instructions for every treatment so you can manage recovery confidently after you fly home. For most restorative and cosmetic procedures – same-day crowns, veneers, single implants – aftercare is straightforward: avoid hard or very chewy foods for the first week, keep up gentle oral hygiene, and watch for the red flags listed in your aftercare note.
With your permission, we share treatment notes, post-treatment photographs, and any imaging with your dentist at home so they can pick up routine maintenance and recall examinations seamlessly. For implant patients, we recommend an early check-up with your home dentist within four to six weeks of returning, and at the standard one-year recall thereafter.
Cost considerations and payment
Treatment costs vary widely with the case. We share a written estimate before any treatment begins. The practice does not bill medical aid directly – patients self-claim from their own insurer if applicable, and we provide the documentation you need to do so. Payment is by EFT, card, or cash on the day of treatment. For larger multi-visit cases we ask for a partial deposit to confirm the booking; this is detailed in your written estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How far is the practice from OR Tambo International Airport?
Unit 2, Amorosa Office Park is approximately 45 minutes by road from OR Tambo International, and approximately 25 minutes from Lanseria International. We can recommend accommodation options close to the practice when you confirm your travel dates.
What languages do you treat in?
English and Afrikaans. Most consultations and treatment planning happen in English. For visitors from other language backgrounds, we are happy to receive written enquiries by email or WhatsApp before you travel.
Do I need a written estimate before I travel?
Yes. We will not begin treatment without a written estimate and your consent. Sharing photographs and imaging in advance means we can prepare this for you before you book travel – so you know what to budget and how long the visit will need.
Can you complete dental implants in a single visit?
Single implants and same-day cosmetic crowns can often be completed in one visit. Full-arch implants and complex cases that require bone healing usually need two trips – one for surgery and one for the final restoration, typically three to six months apart. We will be honest about this in your written estimate.
What if I have a dental emergency while I am visiting Johannesburg?
We see emergency patients during our regular daytime hours, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00. WhatsApp us on +27 71 884 3204 with a brief description of what has happened and a photograph if possible, and we will let you know the soonest available appointment. We prioritise emergencies including broken teeth, lost crowns, and dental trauma.
Will my home dentist receive treatment notes for follow-up?
Yes, with your written permission. We share treatment notes, photographs, and any imaging with your home dentist so they can pick up routine recall and maintenance seamlessly after you return. This is particularly helpful for implant and aligner cases that need ongoing review.
